Grass Mowing at Alne Wood Park
Now that Spring has arrived and temperatures are gradually increasing, the grass has been growing quickly, so we have already begun our annual mowing schedule.
During the last week of March, we started mowing pathways on the main part of the site. These are designed to provide access to graves and keep memorials visible, balanced with minimising the areas which need to be cut. There are also the long, straight paths which follow some of the gridlines on the map of the site, these are used for measuring and plot layout. This grid can be seen on our Online Map.
Typically, we also mow the outline of the graves but try to avoid mowing across them. This allows the grass and wildflower seed which is sewn on settled graves to grow during spring and summer, although it can take a year or two to establish. The other areas we cut are the pathway that follows the edge of the burial ground where you can see the memorial trees that have been planted and also the main track and its edges.
As always, we look to balance promoting nature, with ensuring site-users have the access then need. This year, to ensure we can maintain a regular schedule, we have a local contractor cutting the grass onsite.
